Is Linux ready for my netbook? I have been testing Jolicloud to find out.
Like many I joined the Netbook low cost PC market about a year ago but unlike many, I promptly removed windows XP and replaced it with Mac OSX. For the past year I have been very happy with running Mac OSX on my Advent 4211 (MSI Wind) but recently I decided to see what alternative OS’s were out there and after a few weeks of searching, my attention was drawn to Jolicloud.
There is a lot of controversy when it comes to what is the right OS for your computer with opinions differing everywhere you look. Sometimes you just have to take the plunge and see which is right for you and what you use your device for.
I have had a play with a few different flavours of Linux over the years but always found myself returning to my mac whenever I wanted to do anything productive. I have always felt that making things like wireless connections work as they should and not having to surf the net for advice on how to fix things was a great benefit of staying put with the tried and tested. That was until now.
I visited the Jolicloud site and selected to download the Free OS, i was presented with some options, either install via windows and automatically dual boot or select the pro install and install via flash memory stick. I chose the memory stick and did a fresh install, Within 15 minutes the OS was installed. No pain and no issues, rather uneventful really.
Upon running the OS for the first time i decided to get my wireless running first as previously that was always an issue with linux so I clicked the icon in the menu bar and my network was listed straight away to connect to, I entered my password and connected first time. Jolicloud requires you to register for an account so I did that and I was presented with a little prompt to download the updates for the OS so i did that first, again, not one problem presented itself and I was guided through it beautifully.
I installed some applications from the App Directory and was up and away. Please check out my full review to find out if Jolicloud can really be an alternative to windows XP or Hacked Mac OSX on your netbook.
